Penfolds, Max's Shiraz-Cabernet 2020
Since 1844, Penfolds has been grounded in experimentation, curiosity and uncompromising quality. Their success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers. It began with Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold, the pioneers who dreamed big, inventing tonics, brandies, and fortified wines made from grapes and Australian sunshine. It continued with Alf Vesey, Ray Beckwith and Max Schubert, celebrated winemaking legends who pushed their development to extraordinary, bold new heights. The 2020 vintage of Max's was made from a blend of 69% Shiraz and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon taken from vineyards across McLaren Vale, Wrattonbully, Padthaway and Coonawarra. Notes of graphite, a distinctive blue-fruited elegance with a gorgeous cranberry sweetness play on the nose; which moves to a full-bodied, velvety palate with further notes of vanilla sponge, cream, bramble, wet slate, juniper and pink peppercorn. A rich red which pairs best with equally rich, grilled dishes.
