Markovitis, Xinomavro 2019

Flag of Greece

Marcos Markovitis is the third generation of viticulturists and winemakers at Markovitis Winery, first (modern-day) producer in Greece to practice organic grape-growing. Found in the region of Naoussa in the very north of Greece, near the border with Macedonia, Markovitis is famous for making Nebbiolo-style wines that can be just as ageworthy. Xinomavro 2019 is an exceptional example of the grape variety. Grown in tiny quantities to ensure quality, the wine is then aged for 12 months in oak prior to release. A robust, deep red wine with rich notes of dried fig, redcurrant, olive, vanilla, green pepper and tomato leaf. The tannins and acid are now beginning to soften making it nicely approachable now, but this wine will continue to develop over the next 10-15 years.
