Márcio Lopes, Pequenos Rebentos Loureiro 2023

Márcio Lopes studied as an engineer, but cut his winemaking teeth working for two years with Vinho Verde master Anselmo Mendes in Melgaço. He then traveled to Australia where he made wine in Rutherglen and Tasmania, returning to Portugal in 2010 to start his own projects in his native Vinho Verde. His wines reflect his trademark style: channelling the vibe and essence of the region into balanced, hugely drinkable wines. Bright, zesty and finely etched, this Loureiro offers up citrus blossom, grapefruit pith and crunchy green apple, with a flicker of salinity and fresh herbs. There’s real clarity here; a crisp acidity cuts through the gentle leesy texture, giving structure and drive. A far cry from simple Vinho Verde, it’s a focused, quietly expressive white with a mouthwatering, mineral finish that lingers just long enough to demand another sip. Electric stuff.
